What an EE upgrade really costs: Fixed prices in USD · 2026
Quick answer

At WebCodeDev, an EE6 to EE7 upgrade costs $1,200–$3,500, a legacy EE1–EE5 rescue $2,000–$6,000, and PHP 8 fixes alone start at $450. The price depends mostly on how many add-ons you use and how many are abandoned, not on how many pages the site has.

"How much will it cost?" is the first question on almost every upgrade enquiry, and most agencies won't answer it publicly. We will. These are the fixed price ranges we quote, in US dollars, and what decides where your site falls.

Our price ranges

  • EE Health Check (written report on version, PHP, add-ons and risks): $199
  • PHP 8 compatibility fixes only: from $450
  • EE6 to EE7 upgrade: $1,200 – $3,500
  • EE1–EE5 legacy rescue to EE7: $2,000 – $6,000
  • Move EE to a new host or server: from $350
  • ExpressionEngine to WordPress migration: $3,000 – $10,000
  • Care plans after the upgrade: $129 – $449 a month
  • Hourly work: $45 an hour

What makes an upgrade cheaper

  • Add-ons that are still maintained. If every add-on has a release for your target version, the upgrade is mostly testing.
  • Logic kept in templates and add-ons, not PHP. Templates with PHP parsing turned on need line-by-line checks.
  • A recent starting point. EE6.4 to EE7 is a much smaller step than EE2 to EE7.

What makes it more expensive

  • Abandoned add-ons. Each one needs a replacement, a patch or rebuilt functionality, plus moving the content it holds. On old sites this is most of the bill.
  • Custom extensions written years ago for PHP 5.
  • Multiple Site Manager (MSM) installs, because every site needs testing.
  • E-commerce. Store and CartThrob checkouts need careful end-to-end testing.

Notice what's not on either list: the number of pages. A 2,000-entry site with three clean add-ons is cheaper to upgrade than a 50-page site with ten abandoned ones.

Upgrade or rebuild?

If the upgrade quote gets close to a rebuild, and the site is due a redesign anyway, a rebuild on current EE or a move to WordPress can be better value. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line you're on. We've written up the trade-offs in ExpressionEngine vs WordPress.

Why our prices are lower than many US and UK agencies

We're based in India, so our overheads are lower, not our standards. We work in English, overlap with UK and Irish mornings and US East Coast mornings, and you can read our reviews on Fiverr and Clutch before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the audit really free?

Yes. We look at your site, your EE and PHP versions and your add-ons, and reply with a fixed quote. You're under no obligation. The $199 Health Check is a separate, detailed written report for teams who want documentation.

Do you charge in pounds or euros?

We quote in US dollars for every client. Your card or bank converts at the day's rate.

Are add-on licences included in the price?

No. Paid add-on licences are bought in your name so you own them. We'll list what's needed and the cost in the quote.
